About the artist

My history with art

Hi! I’m Megan. I’ve been making art literally for as long as I can remember. My grandfather taught me to oil paint the second I could hold a paintbrush, and my grandmother taught me to sew and crochet when I was about 9 or 10. I started making jewelry around the same time, when my mom worked for a craft store and brought me to some of the classes they held. In high school I got into cosplay and fashion design. I graduated from Dickinson College in 2017 with my bachelor’s degree in physics and environmental science - I didn’t study art, but I always walked around campus with a ball of yarn and a crochet hook, or a set of pliers, beads, and a spool of wire. In 2019 I moved to New England. During the COVID-19 pandemic I finally got into rockhounding for my own gems and minerals, and eventually lapidary work to create my own centerpieces for pendants. Most recently I’ve begun foraging for seasonal flowers and pressing them to preserve in resin.

Why “Galaxy Gecko”?

The “galaxy” part comes from my love for astronomy - all things science, really - and my fascination with the cosmos. The Astronomy department at my college was part of the Physics department, and though the former wasn’t my major, I still spent so many nights in that building or on its roof, gazing at the stars or looking through the telescope.

The “gecko” comes from my two leopard geckos - Ada, who I got in college and has since passed, and Rosalind or “Rosie,” who I still have today - named for Ada Lovelace and Rosalind Franklin.

Other info

Aside from art, my interests include gardening, rock and metal music, ecology, geology, astronomy, climate activism, nature, video games, and being a silly goose. I’ve got two dogs - a husky/pit mix named Nova, and a black lab named Cosmo - my leopard gecko Rosie, and my wonderful partner Nick.

About the art

Let me start off broadly: An argument can be made that the most human thing is art. It represents who we are, but it also makes us who we are. It’s followed us from the very dawn of humanity and its close relatives, it exists in countless forms, and it permeates every culture. From the Lascaux cave paintings and Italian frescoes to modern day animation and notebook doodles, we make art because we can.

I’m no Michaelangelo, but I make my art for the same reason: because I can, and I enjoy it.

As stated before, I design and make by hand every single piece of art I sell here. When possible, I source the materials myself instead of buying them - foraging for flowers to dry and preserve, digging for rocks to polish - or I upcycle from sources such as old electrical wire or scraps from other projects. I take inspiration from wherever I can, but do my best to have my designs be as original as possible, and try to stay cognizant of the lines between appropriation and appreciation. I don’t make things in bulk - I make them as I’m inspired.

Nothing here is drop-shipped. Nothing here is made with AI. Nothing here is mass-produced.

Every piece is a little bit unique and made with love.
